Daddy's Star Wars Birthday Messenger Bag

Little Bit's daddy had a birthday on July 2nd. A couple of months before his birthday, B asked me for a Star Wars messenger bag that was padded so he could use it for his laptop. Together we drafted what he wanted. The bag seemed simple, but between my fatigue and trying to find a comfortable cutting position, I didn't finish until the night before his birthday.

I used outdoor canvas fabric so that it would be waterproof since he planned on putting food in the front pocket.

The finished bag was 17"x14"x5". The Star Wars fabric was basic cotton with fleece padding and the same canvas material for the lining. I upcycled the padding from an old suitcase to complete the pocket for the laptop. I also used a thin plastic place mat to add a bit of sturdiness. For the soft back pocket, I used fleece again for the padding. That's where he plans to keep his tablet when traveling. I gave him two front pockets for other "stuff". A couple of plastic buckles from Joann's is used for the closure along with nylon strips. The bag's strap was another upcycle from his Timbuktu bag that he said was too big which was the reason I was asked to make the bag in the first place.

A little bit about Lil Bit

What's this about?
I'm not really a blogger, but wanted to chronicle some moments in preparing for my child somewhere other than Facebook. I'm very much a DIYer and love to save money where I can. I can be fairly private so you won't be seeing pictures of me and my family regularly, but I want to share tips and tricks that I learn along the way. I'm due September 4, 2015 so the plan is to share my various crafts, upcycle projects, tidbits of parenting and a few pictures here and there.

A Little Back Story
After having had a miscarriage, I was very scared to get attached to this little one early on. I didn't want to pick a name so I decided on Lil Bit (LB) as a nickname and my husband got on board with referring to the baby as such. Even now that we know she's a girl, she's going to remain LB until we meet her and see which name fits her.

About Mommy and Dad
I'm Jai, 35 (I'll be 36 when she's born). This is going to be my first child. My husband, Bri, and I have been married a little over 2 years and together for a bit over 4 years. We're both engineers and can be  considered nerds, but we're both really good with our hands and save a lot of money that way. I might have to share some of his handiwork on this blog as well. We are an interracial couple so I'll cover some of that aspect of parenting as it is relevant.
